Kuwaiti Designer Rawa Alloughani Selected for King Charles III’s Horticultural Exchange Program, Designs Official Sustainable Jacket
Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has chosen Rawa Alloughani, founder of sustainable fashion brand OPAS, to represent the country in the prestigious Horticultural Exchange Program hosted by The King’s Foundation in the United Kingdom.
This initiative, under the patronage of King Charles III, is part of a three-year cultural sustainability partnership between the UK and Kuwait, commemorating 125 years of diplomatic relations. Rawa is part of the program’s second cohort, following last year’s inaugural delegation.
Over 11 days, Rawa joined participants in hands-on training at world-renowned sites such as Kew Gardens, RHS Wisley, the Chelsea Physic Garden, and Highgrove, engaging in sessions on regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, heritage preservation, and sustainable design.
As part of the exchange, Rawa was commissioned to design the official unisex barn jacket for all delegates. The jacket, water-resistant, pocket-rich, and tailored for gardening, features:
- Kuwait’s national flower
- An authentic Kuwaiti postage stamp
- Handwoven Bisht fabric from Kuwait’s Al Sadu Society, the nation’s first sustainable textile producer
- Zero-waste production using water-resistant, easy-to-clean fabrics
“Sustainability is about caring for the planet, our culture, and our communities,” says Rawa. “I wanted the jacket to tell Kuwait’s story while serving as a practical, lasting tool for sustainable living.”
Rawa’s vision for OPAS extends beyond environmental stewardship to social impact. The brand runs quarterly community programs, from providing Eid clothes to children at Fatima House under the WEMA foundation to gifting graduation presents to high school graduates from Bedouin families.
With OPAS, Rawa hopes to inspire a new generation of designers to create fashion that uplifts people, preserves culture, and protects the planet.
